INCORPORATED IN 1983

The Southern Canberra Gymnastics Club (SCGC) was formed on 14 December 1982 by a group of parents who had children attending a private gymnastics club.

The club was formed with some 60 gymnasts and five coaches and was incorporated on 18 April 1983 with classes at Erindale and Stirling colleges and at Wanniassa High School.

By then the club membership was just over 200 with a coaching staff of 7, headed by Peter Lloyd and assisted by Rhonda Overall. The coaches included Merryn Brown, who later became the head coach of the club.

GYMNASTICS CLUB EXPANSION

In the late 80s, significant effort was expended by the club to obtain a suitable block of land to build a larger facility.

At that time, the SCGC had formed a joint venture company with the Tuggeranong Judo Club with the aim of developing a multi-purpose facility and to seek funding grants from government.

The current site on Block 4 Section 293, Wanniassa, was ultimately selected and provided by the ACT Government and the lease was signed on 1 June 1992.

OUR CLUB TODAY

The club has now grown to now have some 1,000+ gymnasts, 6 full time coaches and some 64 part-time and casual coaches. In addition to this, the gymnastics club provides classes in a number of schools within the ACT and the surrounding region.Southern Canberra Gymnastics Club’s organisation comprises a committee and a management team led by the senior program managers.

The club has a Star 4 rating under Gymnastics Australia’s Club 10 quality assurance program. To achieve this rating, the club’s operations, policies, procedures, facilities and a range of other requirements were independently audited. We’re also a Level 3 Good Sports Club.

About Us

The Southern Canberra Gymnastic Club (SCGC) is an Incorporated community (not for profit) sporting organisation offering a wide range of programs and gymnastics coaching for children of all ages, and adults.
The club is affiliated with Gymnastics ACT and, through it, with Gymnastics Australia. The club has been honoured with the prestigious Tuggeranong Valley Coach of the Year award three times. We also won Women’s Artistic Gymnastics National Levels “coach of the year” in 2017.

GYMNASTICS FOR ALL LEVELS

While having strong competitive programs, the club prides itself on its commitment to its recreational programs that allow for kids of all sporting abilities to participate in a fun environment.

The club currently has some of the best coaches in Australia and we continually strive to provide the best coaching experience for the children, regardless of their skill levels. The club has produced top class gymnasts, including several Australian representatives. Our gymnasts regularly represent the ACT at Australian Championships, with a number of these winning individual and team medals. In local state and National Clubs competitions Southern Canberra has also been a leader, producing many State Champions and National Club team award winners.

COACHES APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

Southern Canberra Gymnastics Club is also committed to the life-skills development of its gymnasts by providing valuable work experience through its Coaches Apprenticeship program.

This program takes those gymnasts who wish to take up coaching and assigns them to a more experienced coach to gain coaching skills and experience until they reach the age requirement to achieve formal coaching accreditation. This work experience, we believe, is also of significant benefit to the on-going life-skill development of those involved.
